Well, 2018 was. . .fun?

writing-828911_1920.jpg

I had high hopes for 2018, as a mom, a wife, and an author.

And my to do list wasn’t grandiose by any means. I wanted to get at least one book published, work on a couple of short stories, clean up my To-Read List, organize the house a bit, and organize my family a little bit.

And yet here we are, a mere month away from the end of the year, and I haven’t even marked one item off of my 2018 Wish List.

But that’s not to say that I haven’t made accomplishments or learned anything from this year. I’ve learned quite a bit, and made some big steps towards completing a few of my goals.

I’ve spent the second half of the year really focused on Support Indie Authors. Err, at least, more focused than I was the first half of the year. While some of our members think that my inactivity on the forum is a sign that I’m not paying attention, it couldn’t be further from the truth. I spend the majority of my time answering emails, private messages, alpha reading, beta reading, and promoting our website.

In revamping the website and beginning to work more closely with some of our Premium Subscribers, I’ve learned something: I love mentoring authors.

paper-3082623_1920.jpg

I love helping another author take their idea, polish it, and turn it into the beautiful work of art they envisioned when they were drafting it. I love getting excited with them as they see the progress they’ve made, and I enjoy discussing the intricate details and behind the scenes thought processes that they go through while creating it.

I almost love this more than creating my own work. I must admit that this could just be my high level of procrastination at work, but it’s been such a relief to focus on others’ work instead of my own.

That’s not to say that I haven’t written this year - I’m actually in the process of editing my final Rehab for Superheroes segment, and I have partial drafts of two short stories. And look! I’m actually writing a blog, ha ha.

So what’s next?

I try again. And then in 2020, I’ll try again, and again, and again. (and so forth and so on) And I’m going to refuse to feel guilty for it any longer. I am a busy mom. My children come first, and then my author children come second. My work typically falls to the bottom of a long long to do list. And I’m okay with that, because some day, even though it may be years from now, inspiration will strike again and I will be unable to stop writing.

In the last month that I have in 2018, I am going to try my hardest to get through the majority of my To Read list so that I can start fresh in 2019. And I want Michael (my current WIP) to be in the hands of one of the most gentlemanly ninja-editors I know.

And that’s it. End of to do list for the year.

I’d like to leave you with one final thought: take it easy on yourself. We live in a world that is so quick to judge, so quick to be negative, and so quick to look down on us. Don’t add your own judgments and negativity upon yourself. Build yourself up. Be your own cheerleader.

I was raised to be “realistic” about my abilities and taught to make rational goals instead of lofty ones. Don’t do that. Dream big. It’s okay. Take a little pride in yourself so that when you look in the mirror, you smile because you like who you are. Celebrate the accomplishments you’ve made, even if it is just that you survived 2018. Because I too, survived, and it’s been an impressive feat on my behalf.

Do I want to do better next year? Of course. But I’m proud of myself for making it this far without a mental breakdown.

Celebrate yourself. Have an extra drink; eat that extra slice of cake just this once. Be proud of who you are and what you’ve accomplished.

We were authors in 2018 and we will be authors in 2019, regardless of how much we write.

INCOMING TRANSMISSION

***And now, a brief message from your Supreme Overlord***

For those of you wondering who on earth I am and are raising your eyebrows at the Supreme Overlord reference, my name is Ann Livi Andrews and I run Support for Indie Authors, SIA for short (no relation to the Australian singer). What started as a small idea in January 2015 has quickly turned into a vast wealth of support, encouragement, resources, etc for Indie Authors.

We have now grown to 5,000+ members and having outgrown Goodreads, we began our own website (www.supportindieauthors.com) dedicated to helping Indie Authors be the best they can be. We are now 13 Moderators strong and have put in countless hours to ensure an organized and well managed group.

Sure sure, Ann,” you might say. “But what’s with the blog post?

Right – to the point.

We are about to undergo a major transformation on the Goodreads' side of the equation. We just celebrated our First Birthday, or First Anniversary, whichever way you’d like to look at it, and with over 5,000 members, I’m sure you can imagine just how many folders, topics, and comments we have to sort through on a daily basis.

In addition, with this many topics to sort through,  it becomes difficult for our members to find the answers they’re looking for to questions that have already been posted. We receive a lot of “Do you know where that one post that the one guy posted a few days ago is?” queries from our members.

So here’s the deal: tons and tons of posts are going to be deleted.

BUT DON’T PANIC.

We’re compiling all of them into an easy to read and easy to search PDF that you’ll be able to download from our website. (For free, of course) This will be updated on a semi regular basis (as often as I or my other moderators can – I don’t pay them, you know – at least not yet.)

In addition, we’re going to be posting a new set of rules in response to some of the criticisms and . . .um. . .how shall I put this. . .harassment that we’ve received. The majority of you are super amazing members and we're grateful for your participation and the respect that you show one another. Unfortunately, a handful of people haven't been quite as understanding.

With this in mind, we are going to be a little stricter in the future, to keep things safe for everyone. These rules will be straight to the point with no room for imaginative interpretation. With so many members, we’re going to have to toughen our defenses in order to maintain an organized and peaceful environment. We want to keep this forum and our group just as awesome as it’s been for the past year.

So there you have it. Changes are a-coming. But we’re still the same fun-loving Mods that we always have been. The Fun Folder won’t be disappearing. We’ll still be joking around etc. Just remember to keep it respectful and you won’t wake up to a cut-in-half bookmark lying on the pillow next to you.

As always, if you have any questions, or you feel that you have an issue with me or one of my Mods, please send me a message about it. Despite my tyrannical title, I am actually all about resolving conflicts. A happy and content army is one who can conquer many.

***End Transmission - Resume your regular routine***

Once again, all of the free books will be listed on the official Book Blast website

The life of a superhero is not all glamour and fame. The truth is that they just want to live as close to normal lives as they possibly can, and they’ve found a man who they believe can offer that to them. Not only does he promise to find cures for their “powers,” but he offers a retirement plan as well!

What is your favorite underrated holiday treat?

My mother and I make trays and trays of Christmas cookies and candies every year, but my favorite is probably the fudge or the chocolate covered peanut butter balls. In addition, no Holiday Season is complete without white almond bark covered oreos, homemade snickerdoodles, and my mother's homemade sugar cookies (the best EVER!)

My grandmother always used to give to the ASPCA, so that would probably be mine as well. I've always had a heart for animals and it breaks every time I see an animal purposefully neglected or injured. https://www.aspca.org

All SIA Wants for Christmas

Riley Amos Westbrook

I already have it all. A good woman, a loving family, and amazing friends to share my journey with.

BB Wynter

1. I wish for a giant Christmas stocking with a hunk inside, still alive; might need some air holes in there.

2. An upgraded bionic body, with eyes that work and change colour like Christmas lights.

3. And a fancy hat. If the hat is able to dance and sing, even better.

Actually forget the live hunk. I want a designer, looks human, robot hunk, that just requires an hour to charge up and is invincible, but also has superhero powers and eventually turns evil, and takes over the world as ultimate robot hunk emperor and then I end up being his human slave, and start the beginning of a revolution, but I’m torn between his awesome good looks and the good of humanity.

VM Sawh

1. Life sized MechaGodzilla from 1975, with the disco eyes and the snazzy soundtrack.

2. I want Daft Punk to throw a house party and TRONerize my house.

3. I want glass floors with a pool full of luminescent jellyfish beneath it, this way when I go to sleep the water and the squishies make my room have Northern Lights.

Ann Livi Andrews

1. I want a never ending supply of Titos. I mean, I promote them all the time. It's the least they could do, right? RIGHT??

2.  I want to never have to sleep again. Think of all the books that I could write and all the indie books that I could read! And the SIA website would be updated every day! And and. . .yeah.

3. Once, just once, when I go in for my yearly check up at the doctor, I'd like her to say "You know, we've decided to try a new therapy, just as an experiment to see how it will affect your overall health. Considering you have no listed allergies, we'd like to you step into our KITTEN ROOM!!!!" Where there are furry and cuddly kittens playing and being adorable and I can stay as long as I want!

Christina McMullen

1. I want to see true peace in the world. I want an end to war, famine, poverty, injustice, and inequality. Barring that:

2. I want an army of fifty-foot tall killbots who will help bring about the end of war, famine, poverty, injustice, and inequality by uniting the entire planet under my firm but benevolent rule. Barring that:

3. One day out of the year where I can do what I want, eat what I want, and ignore the grown up responsibilities of the real world and travel into the fictitious realm of my choice without repercussions.

Dwayne Fry

1. Harmony for those without it

2. Healing for those without it

3. Hope for those without it

GG Atcheson

1- Indie paperback books

I already have quite a few displayed on my bookshelf and I am proud of them all so my goal is to acquire more this year.

2- A trip to my hometown.

Last time I went to Montreal was in 2007 so I think I'm overdue. I might not recognize my son the next time I see him.

3- Finish my work in progress.

It's about time I go back to work on it. LX isn't too happy about having been set aside for so long.

Tony Deeney

1) A space trip to the moon.... please.... please.... I REALLY want to stand on the moon.

2) A book! Yes, a book: a book with ALL the answers! That'd be very, very cool.

3) Once I have these, I'll settle for family time around the table with roast turkey! I am not greedy... ;)

Ellison Blackburn

1. An all-in-one time travel, geo, world shut off, mobile remote control built into my phone (as well as a replacement phone)

2. A 1970s sansui direct drive turntable and all original release Pink Floyd vinyls in mint condition.

3. Theo James.

Melissa Jensen

1. A Kindle.

2. My story ideas to magically appear on my laptop requiring absolutely no effort on my part what so ever.

3. An all expenses paid trip to London.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING BOOK BLAST

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Once again, it’s time for a #SupportIndieAuthors sponsored  Book Blast event!

This time around, your spook-tacular event coordinators bring you:

Adorable illustrations brought to you by SIA’s very own Featured Author of the Month, Melissa Jensen.

Although the name is spooky, there’s going to be something for everyone. On Saturday, October 24th, we will have dozens of authors offering scores of free books! As usual, in the week leading up to the event, we’d like to tell you a little about our participants, so we’ve devised this holiday themed mini-interview. Since there are so gosh darned many of us, we’re going to do things a little differently this time around. Instead of one very long list of authors, several bloggers will each post a handful of interviews. Below you will find not only the talented authors who I am hosting, but links all of the other blogs, so make sure to click though and meet all of our authors!

And of course, all of our books will be listed on the official Book Blast website: www.FreeBookBlast.com

What are the names and genres of the books you are offering?

Crimson Mistress (Rehab for Superheroes #1)

Jack (Rehab for Superheroes #2)

Em (Rehab for Superheroes #3)

Dakota (Rehab for Superheroes #4)

Genre: Superhero/Graphic Novel/Action/Thriller (Is it bad that I’m not sure how to classify these?)

Who will enjoy the books you are offering, spooky fiends or fraidy cats?

I cater to an audience of all types and ages. There is no graphic violence nor horror within these pages. However, burnt out superheroes who just want to rest and are willing to go to extremes to make this possible? Yeah, that’s pretty much the whole plot right there.

Tell us about your favorite, worst, most unique, or most embarrassing Halloween costume. Got a picture you can share with us?

Mmm. Let me think. . .Growing up in a Christian home I was allowed to dress up for Halloween, but I mostly trick-or-treated at my church. Sometimes the mall and or library. But lemme see what I got in the way of pictures. . .

What is the name and genre of the book you are offering?

I'm offering my latest release, "GR3T3L-1", it's a science fiction take on the Hansel & Gretel fairytale.

Who will enjoy the book you are offering, spooky fiends or fraidy cats?

I think spooky fiends and fraidy cats alike will enjoy it, unless said cats are specifically afraid of being abandoned on an alien planet.

Our resident Ninja has the ability to hide behind plants -- Look closely and you can see him -- just barely.

Our resident Ninja has the ability to hide behind plants -- Look closely and you can see him -- just barely.

Tell us about your favorite, worst, most unique, or most embarrassing Halloween costume. Got a picture you can share with us?

My most unique Halloween costume was actually part of a History assignment we are given. We were to dress up as a famous historical figure and come to class to give interviews and presentations in character. I chose to come as Jack the Ripper with a cape, top hat and blank theatrical mask, as no one really knows who Jack was. Everyone was nervous. Sorry, no pictures... darling.

Life is like a bag of Halloween candy. Which seasonal treat are you?

Black Jelly Beans! I would always pick those out of the package. Reese's pieces were good too.

The Soul Shepherd and the Threshold. It's YA/Fantasy/Paranormal/Coming of Age. Meet a different kind of hero in the Soul Shepherd Michael, whose eyes are the colour of Crab Nebula.

Who will enjoy the book you are offering, spooky fiends or fraidy cats?

Both. The Shadows are spooky enough. The living are pretty scary, too. As Michael observed, "...the living say that corpses were cold. But in this room where blood still ran warm, the hearts that pumped the blood seemed colder than ice..."

Tell us about your favorite, worst, most unique, or most embarrassing Halloween costume. Got a picture you can share with us?

Orange-striped tiger, hands down. I even made the costume, but no, too embarrassed to share any evidence of my momentary lapse of judgement :)
