What's In A Name?

This will be a short blog post – at least I think it will be. I really only have one question to ask/discuss. How do you come up with character names?

Growing up, I kept a running list in my head of my favorite names. Matthias. Methuselah. Dakota. Celeste. Nicole. Keita. The list goes on. I used to check out baby name books from the library – and get made fun of. “Something you need to tell us?” my friends would ask with grins. At first I would defend myself and try to explain that I was writing a story, but I eventually gave up. Most of them were just teasing and couldn’t have cared less about my preferred hobbies.

Nowadays, I usually just go with the first name that pops into my head. Unless it’s just absolutely necessary to the story, I don’t look for a name with a specific meaning. If the name Susan pops into my head, I use the name Susan.

The only time I do not use the name that initially pops into my head is when it sounds too similar to some other currently popular character. For example, I don’t particular like that Keita rhymes with Peeta. However, I’ve been writing Keita’s story since 2004, so I wasn’t about to change it simply because of The Hunger Games’ popularity.

So what are your methods? Do you internet search? Do you have names in mind when you begin? Or do you have a bucket full of boy name and girls names and randomly draw them when writing a new story? I would love to hear some feedback on this one!

Told you this would be short. We’re just incredibly busy this weekend. I’m sorting through childhood memories in my basement as we’re trying to simplify and unclutter our lives. It’s more difficult than I thought it would be. Instead of getting rid of stuff, I found myself staging all of my Puppy in My Pocket figures and braiding my Fairy Tail figures hair. I really miss being a kid!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I wish you the best of luck in your Monday endeavors.
